Science policy gets Cabinet nod

Before the session of Indian Science Congress centenary in Calcutta, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a new policy on science, technology and innovation to be launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Science Congress to draw a roadmap innovation.
The new policy document is an update of the 2003 science and technology policy, with a clear focus on innovation, the establishment of research institutes and participation in mega science projects in order to position itself among the top five scientific powers of the world in 2020.
First clues about the new policy became the Science Congress in Bhubaneswar last year, when the then Minister of Science Vilasrao Deshmukh said that policy is dedicated to the nation soon. The policy aims to promote an ecosystem of innovation for inclusive and sustainable growth and bring private sector industries and public under an umbrella for the delivery of "measure the economic and social".
The policy document will set the ground rules to accelerate the research process, dissemination and distribution of science led solutions to meet India's aspirational goals for rapid growth, sustainable and inclusive.
It will include scientific careers, which makes it attractive for research and development of world class infrastructure for R & D in frontier areas of science.
Recently, an independent study commissioned by the department of science and technology research suggests diver sification of India to the emerging areas like computer science and drug discovery rather than being grounded in traditional areas such as agriculture Tropical Medicine and received substantial government funding.
India Portfolio research showed strength in the physical sciences, despite the resources devoted to agricultural science and plant and animal sciences, suggests an analysis by Thomson Reuters.
Indian research results was virtually stagnant in 1980 and 1990, when other Asian countries outperformed India.
By the way, the 100th meeting of the Science Congress will give the first opportunity toPM Manmohan Singh and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee for sharing dais since their split in September.
Two and a half months later, the former railway minister decided to chart a new course because of his opposition to the stance of the Congress on the removal of subsidy on LPG cylinders and foreign direct investment in retail that allows multi -mark. Although a NationalDevelopment Council is scheduled for December 27 to approve the plan document of five 12 years, West Bengal is likely to be represented by its Finance Minister Amit Mitra and not the minister.
